Wartrace Facts:
  • Wartrace Creek flowed due South on the NE corner of the present day Bedford County line and is about 25 miles due South of Murfreesboro, TN.
  • Wartrace is often known as The Cradle of the Tennessee Walking Horse yet has recently aquired the Tennessee Walking Horse Museum.
  • Wartrace was once a bustling depot town on the Nashville, Chattanooga & St. Louis Railway or the NC&StL RailRoad.
  • Wartrace Depot as it was kniwn then, was incorporated in 1856 and a bridge was ordered to be erected across Garrison Fork of Duck River
  • In the late 1800's the railroad brought Victorians of the Victorian era to Wartrace to relish on the rich healing power of the mineral and sulfur springs around Wartrace.
  • The mineral Water from Wartrace became in great demand and was shipped via train and railroad to far away places.
  • Wartrace at one time is said to have five banks and two large flourmills with the railroad dispatching up to 13 mainline passenger trains a day through town.
  • Many water ways of the Duck River mafe the area a favorable place to live and settle, Cotton Gins sprang up all over Bedford County in the early 1800's especially from 1810-1820. To accomodate the good people of the area, "still-houses" became popular with one of the most extensive distillery stills being in Wartrace and owned by Zach Thompson.
  • The first Distillery in Bedford County Tennessee was the Zach Thompson Distillery located in Wartrace.
  • Many Bedford County Tennessee Distilleries followed of which were Wartrace's Marcus L. Rabey Distillery and the Blackmore and Company's Distillery that had the capacity to process 60 gallons of whiskey per day.
  • The first World Grand Champion Tennessee Walking Horse was named Strolling Jim.
  • Strolling Jim was owned by Floyd Carothers who was the proprietor of the Wartrace Railroad Hotel now known The Walking Horse Hotel.
  • Wartrace is on the National Register of Historic Places and was first listed in the mid 1990's.
